Squeaky Shoes

You can tell when it's new resident/fellow time. They all come in their best new clothes and their shoes squeak when they walk. There is a host of fresh young faces who still say "Please" and "Thank You." Looking at some of these new docs I feel old! Their baby faces remind me more of siblings than co-workers.
For the next few weeks as they find their way and break in their shoes, the regular staff serve as guides. I have to remember that even know that I'm new, too, I know a little more than they do. At least I can find the cafeteria and the bathroom.
As the future of medicine settles in to their new role their shoes will squeak less and I won't hear them coming.
